Chess Tournament at Y-CON

Chess is a board game for two players, called White and Black, each controlling a set of chess pieces, with the objective to checkmate the opponent's king. It is sometimes called international chess or Western chess to distinguish it from related games such as xiangqi (Chinese chess) and shogi (Japanese chess). The recorded history of chess goes back at least to the emergence of a similar game, chaturanga, in seventh-century India. The rules of chess as they are known today emerged in Europe at the end of the 15th century, with standardization and universal acceptance by the end of the 19th century. Today, chess is one of the world's most popular games, and is played by millions of people worldwide.

Tournament Rules & Regulations

Rules:

  • Players will use a 10-minute timer with a 3-second add-on every time they push their clock.
  • Clocks will be the Chess.com clock app. We ask that at least one player has this app.
  • Your move is over once you push your clock, and the next player can make their next move.
  • If a player makes an illegal move and then presses their clock (indicating the turn is over), that player will automatically lose.
  • Each player will receive one draw offer per game, and the only time a draw can occur due to an offer is if both players agree to it. If the other player refuses the draw, you can no longer offer a draw for the rest of the game.
  • Not having sportsmanship will not be tolerated. Tournament organizers will remove you from the tournament if you say anything offensive or demonstrate aggressive or unacceptable behavior.
  • Each player must keep track of the time remaining on their clock from each game.

Scoring system:

  • If you win in any way (Checkmate, Timeout, or Resignation), it is one point for your seed in the standings
  • If there is a draw, both players will receive 0.5 points for their seed in the standings.

Deciding Who Plays Who:

  • Swiss Round Robin:
    • Set 1 - The winner of a coin toss, rock-paper-scissors, dice roll, etc... will pick if they want to play 2 of the 3 games as black or white.
    • Sets 2 and 3 - Each player keeps track of the time remaining from set 1. The player with more time remaining on their clock will choose to play 2 of the 3 games as black or white.
  • Playoff:
    • Round 1 - The higher seeded player will pick if they want to play 2 of the 3 games as black or white.
    • Round 2 Onwards - Each player keeps track of the time remaining from their previous set. The player with more time remaining on their clock will choose to play 2 of the 3 games as black or white.

Playoffs:

  • The Top 8 players from the round-robin will advance to the Playoffs (player advancement to be determined)
  • The top four players will play a semifinal to determine who gets through to the finals, and the 2 players with the highest time will select whether they want to play 2 of the 3 games as black or white.
  • Armageddon: If the playoffs draw, the two players will write down a time they would like to play without telling the other players. Whoever writes down the least amount of time gets to play as Black ( you must play the game with the time you wrote down). If there is another draw, the player with the black pieces will win the match and advance.
