Super Smash Bros Tournament

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a 2018 Japanese crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd. and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, succeeding Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The game follows the series' traditional style of gameplay: controlling one of the various characters, players must use differing attacks to weaken their opponents and knock them out of an arena. It features a wide variety of game modes, including a campaign for single-player and multiplayer versus modes. Ultimate features 89 playable fighters, including all characters from previous Super Smash Bros. games alongside newcomers. The roster ranges from Nintendo mascots to characters from third-party franchises.

What controllers are allowed? Can I bring my own controller?

Yes! We will be bringing controllers that we can source to the event, but it is strongly recommended to bring your own. All controllers (GameCube, Pro, joycons etc...) will be allowed for use. Please note we will only be able to connect a certain amount of controllers to one switch at a time, and want to avoid minimal controller un-hooking and reconnecting.

Tournament Rules & Regulations

  • Match Format: Each set will consist of a best 2/3 games and best 3/5 in the Top 8 finals.
  • Stocks & Time: 3 Stocks, 7 Minute games with no items.
  • Stage Selection: This year we'll adopt the tournament legal stages for Super Smash Ultimate. These stages are:
    • Starters:
      • Pokémon Stadium 2
      • Battlefield
      • Small Battlefield
      • Smashville
      • Town and City
    • Counter-Picks:
      • Final Destination
      • Hollow Bastion
      • Kalos Pokémon Region
    • How to select a stage:
      • First players will flip a coin to decide who will ban a stage first. Let’s say they ban Battlefield. The next player bans two stages (for example, Pokémon Stadium 2 & Town and City), then the first player will ban a stage from the remaining two (example, Small Battlefield) – the remaining stage is Smashville which is what is played for game one.
      • Counter picks: For game two, the three additional stages become available to select. The loser of game one will ban two of the eight stages, the winner will ban three stages, then two more stages are banned to land on the stage for game two.
      • If you need assistance or clarification, don’t hesitate to ask a video games volunteer.
      • Players are also allowed to make a “gentlemen’s agreement” and agree on a stage selection; however, it must be one of the 8 legal tournament stages.
  • Matches that go to time/sudden death: If at the end of the seven-minute game there is no clear winner, the player with more stocks is the winner. Should the stock level be the same, the winner is determined by who has the lowest damage percentage. Should the damage percentage be the same, sudden death is played.
  • Schedule: The schedule of events, standings and brackets is handled through Start.GG.
    • The bracket and schedule will be finalized before the tournament, however it is still subject to final changes.
    • Failure to show up to your matches promptly will result in penalties such as stock loss or automatic match loss.
  • Pausing and Hitting the Home Button: Pausing the match will be disabled in the game ruleset. Hitting the home button, even by accident, will result in a one stock loss for said player. Multiple offences will result in a match loss.
  • Other rules:
    • Stage hazards are OFF
    • Final Smash Meter is OFF
    • Spirit fighters are OFF
    • Damage Handicap is OFF
    • Launch rate: standard 1.0x
    • No Underdog boost
    • Team Attack is ON for doubles

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask any of the Y-CON Video Game volunteers, who are always more than happy to help you. Best of luck all!
